Antica famiglia che fu creduta originaria di Roma, e di cui si hanno memorie in Montesantangelo e passata poi a Foggia ove fu annoverata fra quelle famiglie nobili. Risulta da un diploma della Regina Giovanna II d'Angiò che nel 1417 era già investita del feudo di Lapigio, in Comitatu Molisij, in persona del milite Francesco Sereno, nato verso la fine del 1300, primo possessore di detto feudo con dominio di vassalli e con piena giurisdizione. Questo Francesco è riconosciuto capostipite della casata. Il ramo primogenito fiorì in Foggia fino alla prima metà del 1600 e si estinse con Camilla, mentre l'antico ramo di Montesantangelo nelle "Giunte alla Historia di Gio. Antonio Summonte", di P. Sarnelli, è registrato ancora vivente nel 1670. Verso la fine del XV sec. si diramò in Altamura, ove fece parte di quel Primo Ordine Civico contando una ininterrotta serie di eletti dei Nobili alle varie Magistrature
