Começa este apelido num filho de Nuno Tristão, cavaleiro da Casa do Infante D. Henrique, onde se criou desde menimo, homem de grande valor que serviu aquele príncipe no descobrimentos da costa da Guiné. Nuno Tristão foi morto pelo gentio no Rio do Ouro, que se ficou a chamar Rio do Tristão. Viveu em Lagos e sua viúva houve tença, que lhe deu o Infante. Do matrimónio nasceu João Infante, cujo apelido tomou por se criar na Casa do I. D. Henrique, ou por seu pai o ter por alcunha. Também foi muito valoroso e serviu D. João II nos descobrimentos, atingindo a Serra Parda, descobrindo o Rio do I., por ale assim denominado, e o Cabo Tormentoso, chamado depois da Boa Esperança. Regressou ao Reino em 1487. Do seu casamento deixou geraçao que ncotinuou o apelido. Não se conhecem armas próprias do apelido, mas Jacinto Leitão Manso

Écartelé, aux 1 et 4, de gueules, à la tour d'argent, ajourée et maçonnée de sable, aux 2 et 3, de sinople, au casque d'argent, ouvert, posé de profil, surmonté d'une fleur-de-lys d'or. Casque de trois-quarts d'argent, garni d'or avec lambrequins d'argent, de gueules, d'or et de sinople. Cimier: un lion de gueules issant, chargé d'une fleur-de-lys d'or, et portant un casque d'argent, ouvert.
