Antica famiglia di Volterra, che si disse esservi venuta dalla Sassonia ai tempi di Ottone il Grande. Ebbe domini feudali nei territori pisano e volterrano. Galgano, vescovo di quella città, ottenne nel 1152 dall'imperatore Federico I la signoria della città stessa e dei castelli della diocesi. Inghiramo di Offo fu dato in ostaggio al Comune di Firenze nel 1254. Paolo di Giovanni, primo di questa famiglia, ottenne il priorato nel 1439 e da allora in poi molti membri di essa occuparono in vari tempi la suprema magistratura. Antonio di Antonio fu Abbreviatore Apostolico, e Inghiramo di Giovanni scrittore della Sacra Penitenzieria ed ambedue ebbero fama di uomini fra i più eruditi della Corte Pontificia. Maggior gloria vi acquistò monsignor Tommaso Inghirami, detto Fedra, che protetto da Lorenzo dei Medici se dedicò all'oratoria e alla poesia e si rese illustre nella filosofia, nella storia, nel diritto. Nel 1495 fu mandato ambasciatore
