A família espanhola antiga, como relatado por Vidal e Jerónimo de Villa oriunda da região de Guipúzcoa, originalmente chamada Isaia, se espalhou ao longo dos séculos, primeiramente em terras sicilianas, seguindo os reis aragoneses e, posteriormente, nas distantes Américas, onde, provavelmente devido a erros de transcrição no registro, o sobrenome foi alterado para Isais. As primeiras referências à família são na época da campanha de Don Lope Diaz de Haro contra Sancho el Fuerte, de Navarra; alguns Isais, de fato, já aparecem como cavaleiros naquela época.
