Originalmente da Dalmácia, e sobre a qual não havia notícias desde 1273. A bibliografia à qual seguimos "Notas históricas sobre as famílias de Pádua e os monumentos da universidade, com um breve tratado de heráldica", impressa em Pádua, com os tipos de Minerva em 1842, ele relata que essa era uma família nobre e antiga de origem veneziana, onde ocupava os escritórios dessas cidades com seus descendentes. Nos tempos antigos, o sobrenome não era obrigatório; costumava-se dizer e escrever, por exemplo: Zuane fio de Piero do Mestre. Por esses motivos, a família Mestre levou o sobrenome da cidade perto de Veneza, de onde se originou. O mesmo pode ser dito para esta família. Eles vêm de épocas distantes, de seis locais diferentes na Itália. O brasão da família Istrigo é: Partido de prata e vermelho, com a estrela de oito raios um do outro.
