Antike italienische Adelsfamilie mit klarer und uralter Tugend, die sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte weltweit verbreitet hat. Sein Familienname ist eine patronymische Form des Namens Jorio, einer seit dem Mittelalter belegten italienischen dialektalen Versüdlichung des Namens Giorgio, die wahrscheinlich durch byzantinischen und neugriechischen Einfluss entstanden ist. Andere Genealogen hingegen glauben, dass diese Linie innerhalb der römischen Gens der Giorgi entstand, von denen sich eine „familia communi iure“ im heutigen Weiler San Iorio niederließ und diese berühmte Familie hervorbrachte, die später (de ) Jorio oder (de) Iorio, im neapolitanischen Raum. Es handelt sich also um eine sehr vornehme neapolitanische Familie, auch wenn andere Zweige in Mittel- und Norditalien und insbesondere in Latium, Emilia-Romagna, Piemont und Valle d'Aosta ebenfalls eine glänzende Blütezeit hatten.
