Antigua e ilustre familia, cuyos orígenes están envueltos en tinieblas y leyendas. Según lo que se ha transmitido, encuentra su cuna en Polonia, de donde luego se ramificó también a Austria y Rusia, y se ha extendido por todo el mundo, a lo largo de los siglos. Es una rama de la noble familia Pielesz, conocida como Katyńsky. Noble en el voidovato ruso, unidad territorial administrativa del Reino de Polonia pero perteneciente geográficamente a Rusia. Cuando este territorio, a finales del siglo X VIII, pasa a formar parte del Reino de Galicia y Lodomiria o, bajo la monarquía de los Austrias, se inicia una verdadera fragmentación de la familia. Entre 1782 y 1834, veintiún miembros de la familia Katyńsky fueron inscritos en el registro de la nobleza del Reino de Galicia y Lodomiria; otros, por otro lado, rechazaron el dominio austríaco y se trasladaron a los territorios bajo el dominio
