Ancienne et très noble famille allemande, originaire de Franconie, dans le pays de Thuringe, connue sous le nom de von der Kere, Ker, Keer, Kehr ou Keher. D'après ce qui nous a été transmis, elle faisait partie de l'entourage des comtes de Henneberg, famille régnant sur plusieurs territoires du duché de Franconie. En particulier, les membres de cette famille reçurent la dignité de sénéchaux (« Truchsess ») du comté de Henneberg. Dès le XIVe siècle, elle possédait également le château de Schwickershausen (Grabfeld), propriété qu'elle conserva jusqu'en 1747. Les membres de cette maison noble faisaient également partie du canton des chevaliers de Rhön-Werra (1520, 1529), un cercle de chevaliers de la Sainte Empire romain appartenant au cercle des chevaliers franconiens. Ils appartenaient également à la société Fürspänger , une société chevaleresque franconienne exclusive, fondée le 13 août 1396 par vingt-six aristocrates. Cette famille a également donné naissance à plusieurs chanoines
