Cette famille est bien véritablement originaire de Bretagne où elle était établie depuis plusieurs siècles. On la retrouve à différentes époques, en divers localités et il y a eu nombreux personnages illustres de ce nom. On signale les personnages dignes de mémoire: Robert, aventurier anglais, au service de Jean de Montfort, prisonnier au combat des Trente en 1351, fit prisonnier le comte d'Auxerre à la bataille d'Auray en 1364, fut nommé par le Prince Noir sénéchal de Guyenne en 1368,obligea du Guesclin à lever le siège de Brest et celui de Derval en 1373; fonda l'hospice des Anglais à Rome en 1380 et mourut en Angleterre en 1406. On remarque (dès le XIIIème siècle) des alliances importantes avec des familles nobles en Bretagne et autres régions françaises.
