Ancienne et noble famille allemande, de vertu claire et ancestrale, connue à l'origine sous le nom de (von) Kroth ou Krot, qui s'est répandue dans le monde entier au cours des siècles. Le patronyme prend définitivement la forme Krot lorsque, à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, une branche de cette famille s'installe à Zagreb (Croatie). Il est à noter que la forme originelle d'un patronyme n'est pas toujours restée intacte au fil des siècles avec son orthographe primitive. Souvent dus à des transcriptions erronées, à des transformations dialectales selon les régions où le lignage s'est peu à peu déplacé, à l'écriture incompréhensible des scribes, etc., il y a eu des changements de phonétique et d'écriture.
