Dagli Opuscoli del Villabianca si rileva essere questa una famiglia di Nicosia, di cui commendasi un Gioacchino La Barbera, giudice pretoriano in Palermo 1758. Un Salvatore la Barbera e Merelli della città di Monte San Giuliano venne, inoltre, con privilegio del settembre 1767, insignito del titolo di barone di San Niccolò ed un barone Giuseppe fu capitano giustiziere di Monte San Giuliano, nell'anno 1790-91. La famiglia alzò per arma: d'azzurro, a due braccia vestite d'argento, moventi dai fianchi dello scudo, impugnanti nel cuore, con le mani dello stesso, un serpente d'oro, ondeggiante in palo. Corona di barone. Altro ramo. Gisberto La Barbera, originario della Catalogna, seguì Re Pietro in Sicilia nel XIV secolo.
