Antichissima e nobilissima famiglia siciliana, di chiara ed avita virtù, fregiata del titolo di Baroni della Sulla e Signori del feudo di Canolo in Aspromonte, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Sulla sua origine vi sono due ipotesi: per alcuni è da ritenersi longobarda, per altri normanna. In ogni modo essa era sicuramente presente in Brescia già nel secolo decimosecondo da donde si portò in Sicilia con il cavalier Gerardo la Rosa, relegato in Siracusa per ordine dell'imperatore Federico II, con altri nobili lombardi, nell'anno 1235, come largamente si legge in una lettera del medesimo Imperatore, datata il 3 di Maggio del medesimo anno. Dopo la morte dell'Imperatore Federico, il Re Corrado, suo figlio, li fece trasportare da Siracusa in Catania, ove il detto Gerardo si accasò con una nobile dama di casa Amarighi, e fu poscia da Manfredo, che seguì nel dominio regio, dopo la morte
