Figura entre as famílias mais antigas de Portugal, a dos Lagos, cujo apelido foi tomado da vila do L., no Reino da Galiza, como pretende certo autor, ou, mais verosímilmente, da honra do L., na freguesia do L., no concelho de Entre Homem e Cávado, a qual constava de grande quinta, com um lago e uma torre de habitação. Ficava a honra do L. defronte do couto da Palmeira, que era dos ascendentes dos Pereiras, ramo da mesma linhagem. Provêm os Lagos de D. Mendo, irmão de Desidério, último Rei dos Longobardos, que veio com uma poderosa armada das partes de Roma para conquistar o Reino da Galiza e ser seu soberano. Devido a grande tempestade que o assaltou junto do cabo de Piorne, ficou malogrado o seu intento, destruindo-se toda a armada, de cujo desastre se conseguiu salvar sòmente com cinco cavaleiros.
