Famiglia fra le più illustri d'Italia, di origine remotissima, risalente all'epoca carolingia. Sono noti nella storia dell'Italia settentrionale i Conti Palatini di Lomello, così chiamati dal famoso comitato rurale del territorio di Pavia, ricordato in documenti della metà del sec. IX. Il primo cenno di un conte di Lomello si ha in una carta del febbraio 953, nella quale "Maginfredus comes laumellensis et filius bone memorie item Maginfredi de loco Mox icio" vende ad Alfredo, del fu Goffredo da Tornego, una masseria situata nel territorio di Mosezzo. Chi fossero gli ascendenti e i discendenti di questo Manfredo che inizia la serie nota dei conti di Lomello, è questione assai controversa tra gli storici; nè i tentativi del Gabotto, del Vesme, del Biscaro per ricostruire l'esatta genealogia hanno condotto, fino ad oggi, a risultati che si possano realmente dire definitivi.
