Villabianca informa que esta familia, llamada Lanza, Lanzi o Lancea, proviene de un Ernesto, duque de Baviera, un valiente líder que, alrededor de 970, fue apodado "el capitán de la gran lanza", de ahí el apellido. Tuvo dos hijos, Enrico y Corrado, quienes, estableciéndose en Lombardía y el Reino de Nápoles, adquirieron muchos feudos y señoríos.
