Antica ed assai nobile famiglia, originaria di Scicli, la quale ha goduto chiara nobiltà in Palermo, Messina e Sciacca e la quale possedette il principato di Santo Stefano o Santa Margherita, il titolo di marchese e le baronie di Bulgarano, Canalotto, Castelluzzo, San Giuseppe, San Leonardo, Martini, Scirinda, etc. Tal casato, inoltre, nel corso dei secoli, sempre riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali. Tra questi, senza nulla levar al valore degli omessi, ricordiamo: Enrico, che, il 9 dicembre 1282, fu nominato, da re Pietro, notaio dell'isola di Malta; notar Andrea, da Aidone, che possedette sotto re Ludovico il feudo Rabiato; Niccolò Andrea, il quale acquistò il feudo di Bulgarano e ne fu investito il 13 settembre 1516 e il 26 marzo 1517; Francesco, che, con privilegio del 21 giugno 1638, ottenne il titolo di barone di San Giuseppe e con privilegio del 19 ottobre
