Antica ed illustre famiglia pugliese, detta Laterza, Terza o Terzani, oriunda dall'omonimo toponimo, passata in Emilia, con un Giovanni, detto il "Terzano", agli inizi del XV secolo. Ivi, tal casato, venne nobilitato in persona di un Gian-Francesco, pubblico lettore di giurisprudenza a Ferrara nel 1560, ambasciatore di Alfonso II d'Este ai pontefici Sisto V, Gregorio XIV e Clemente VIII, il quale lo creò cavaliere. Il Duca di Parma, inoltre, lo fece suo primo scudiere e Ranuzio I Farnese, se ne servì per trattare affari di somma rilevanza. Del ramo rimasto in terra natia, purtroppo, per cagion di sfortuna, la magistra, ma talvolta crudele, istoria ci ha privato della approfondita conoscenza, del momento in cui fu elevato alla nobiltà. Possiamo, tuttavia, ritener soddisfatto il nostro disio di sapere, dal momento che i nomi dei membri della famiglia Laterza si trovano, di sovente, menzionati in documenti ed atti notarili, sin dai secoli
