Antigua e ilustre familia del sur de Italia, de clara y ancestral virtud, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en diversas regiones de Italia. Según nos ha llegado, desciende del linaje noble de los Ligati o Ligata de Liguria, una rama de la cual se dice que llegó al Sur a principios del siglo XVII por motivos comerciales. Llegados a este punto conviene subrayar que la forma original del apellido no siempre permaneció intacta a lo largo de los siglos con su ortografía primitiva. A menudo, debido a transcripciones incorrectas, transformaciones dialectales según las regiones donde el linaje fue traído gradualmente, la escritura incomprensible de los escribas, etc., hubo modificaciones de la fonética y la ortografía.
