La famiglia Leone viveva in Tortona sin dall'XI secolo, poiché nel 1098 Alzolino Leone fu creato cardinale, da papa Urbano II ed era ancora vivente nel 1116, come risulta da documenti dell'epoca da lui stesso sottoscritti. Una delle sei torri principali che, con alte mura merlate, circondavano e difendevano la città, era denominata dei Leone, in omaggio alla famiglia assai ricca ed influente; nel rione ove risiedeva, inoltre, si apriva verso mezzodì la porta Leone a tre arcate che, sul finire del XIII secolo, esisteva ancora. All'assedio di Federico Barbarossa nel 1155 Roderico e Giovanni sostennero, il 14 aprile tra Porta Genovese e Porta Leone, un lunghissimo ed aspro combattimento, protrattosi sino a tarda notte, durante il quale uno dei due Leone perì. Dopo la resa, i Leone si sarebbero trasferiti nel Genovese (id., 287) ma non tardarono a ritornare, e un membro della famiglia non meglio identificato, nel 1184
