Antigua y muy noble familia italiana, de clara y ancestral virtud, a la que varias ramas pasaron al reino de España y gozaron igualmente de nobleza allí. Originalmente conocida como de Lera, esta casa se dividió en dos ramas principales: una se estableció en Lombardía y la otra en tierras sicilianas. Los primeros testimonios de la familia se encuentran ya en el siglo XIV, cuando florecía en Brescia el notario Albertino de Lera. Esta familia no debe confundirse con la familia burguesa de ingenieros cremoneses del mismo nombre. En todo caso, según nos ha llegado, Giovanni Antonio Pietro de Lera Molinari, luego Juan Antonio Pedro de Lera y Molinari, natural de Palanzo, en Lombardía, pasó a residir en Bilbao, según certifica el parlamento de la Signoria (Juntas Generales del Señorío) .
