Une ancienne et très noble famille italienne, d'une vertu claire et ancestrale, dont plusieurs branches passèrent dans le royaume d'Espagne et y jouissèrent également de la noblesse. Initialement connue sous le nom de Lera, cette famille était divisée en deux branches principales : l'une installée en Lombardie, l'autre en terre sicilienne. Les premières attestations de la famille se trouvent déjà au XIVe siècle, lorsque le notaire Albertino de Lera a prospéré à Brescia. Cette famille ne doit pas être confondue avec la famille bourgeoise d'ingénieurs crémonais du même nom. En tout cas, d'après ce qui nous a été transmis, Giovanni Antonio Pietro de Lera Molinari, puis Juan Antonio Pedro de Lera y Molinari, de Palanzo, en Lombardie, ont déménagé pour résider à Bilbao, comme l'atteste le parlement de la Signoria (Juntas Generales del Senorío) .
