Le prime notizie sulla famiglia, riferite dagli storici e dai cronisti pisani, risalgono al secolo IX; ma una genealogia completa e confortata da documenti sicuri, riferisce di un Lorenzo, di Rosselmino, che nel 1290 figura tra gli Anziani di Pisa. A questa magistratura, la più alta della città appartennero senza interruzione i discendenti di Lorenzo, i quali per le alleanze nobilissime contratte vestirono l'abito di cavaliere negli Ordini di Malta e di S. Stefano di Toscana.
