Con atti notarili del genn. 1393 e del 1398 varie famiglie, che già erano cospicue per dovizie, per pubbliche cariche, per antiche origini, formarono fra loro una di quelle associazioni comuni in quei tempi in Genova che si chiamavano Alberghi. Secondo il costume esse lasciarono il proprio nome per assumere tutte insieme un nuovo nome che fu quello attualmente comune e un nuovo stemma che fu dapprima: di rosso al corvo di nero e poi di rosso alle tre corone d'oro e al capo di Genova. Le principali di quelle famiglie erano i De Levanto, De Pagana, Tortorino Borgaro, Figoni, Toso, Luxardi, Magnerri, Sacco, De Palo, Cocacelli, Vignosi e Lifranchi. Ciascuna aveva gloriose memorie. Un Lucchino Lifranchi ebbe dominio in Corsica. Sua nuora Scibilia, bellissima dama fu signora d'Istria. Luigi Tortorino ricevette dalla repubblica l'investitura dell'isola di Corsica: donde la concessione del capo di Genova nello stemma della famiglia.
