A família é originária de Prato, onde, em 10 de maio de 1855, Giovanni nasceu, filho do professor Carlo, um famoso alienista. Desde muito jovem, ingressou na administração dos Arquivos Estaduais e passou por todos os graus de realização, até o do Superintendente dos Arquivos Estaduais de Bolonha. Dotado de engenhosidade fértil e espirituosa, Giovanni Livi destacou-se pelas numerosas e valiosas publicações que demonstravam sua experiência em arquivamento e sua grande perspicácia na investigação histórica. Em Bolonha, onde viveu ininterruptamente de 1898 a 1924, ano em que foi descansado e considerado como segunda casa, ele queria dedicar uma de suas principais obras: "Dante, seus primeiros amantes, seu povo em Bolonha". Ele era membro de muitas academias literárias e membro emérito da Delegação Real da História da Pátria para as Províncias de Romagna. Ele também foi secretário da Comissão Heráldica Real de Romagna, pela qual logo se tornou um elemento precioso

Inquartato: nel 1° e 4° d'azzurro, all'ulivo sradicato al naturale col capo della crociata che è d'azzurro, ad un crescente montante d'oro tra due stelle del medesimo; al 2° trinciato; a. d’argento, alla scacchiera di rosso e d’azzurro dei Salvadori col capo dell’impero d’occidente; b. di rosso, al grifone d’oro impugnante un martello al naturale; 3° trinciato; a. di verde, alla chiesa di pietra al naturale; b. di rosso ad una figura di santo martire al naturale; col capo Costantiniano su tutto l'inquartato. Lo scudo è sormontato da una aquila bicipite coronata d'oro uscente da una corona ducale. Ornamenti: collare dell'ordine Costantiniano, croce e pastorale ortodosso con serpenti su un mantello di rosso ornato con ermellino e coronato da una mitria vescovile ortodossa. Sotto il mantello un cartiglio: +Spes mea in Domino solo est+.
