Illustre famiglia, detta Livi o Livia, di origini antichissime che rimontano alla romana Gens Livia, una delle più importanti dell'epoca, la quale, al dir dello storico Livio, ebbe otto consoli, due censori, tre tribuni, un dittatore ed un magister equitum, e che raggiunse la nobiltà con il matrimonio di Livia con Augusto. Tuttavia, le prime notizie documentabili del casato, si hanno in Prato, ove, il 10 maggio 1855, nacque Giovanni, figlio del professore Carlo celebre alienista. Egli, in giovanissima età, entrò nella amministrazione degli Archivi di Stato, e vi percorse tutti i gradi di raggiungimento, sino a divenire Sopraintendente dell'archivio di Stato di Bologna. Dotato di ingegno fertile e arguto, si distinse per le numerose e pregevoli pubblicazioni che dimostrarono la sua perizia archivista e il suo grande acume nell'indagine storica.
