Antica ed assai nobile famiglia siciliana, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. L'arma della famiglia, come riportato da Antonino Mango di Casalgerardo nel suo "Nobiliario di Sicilia", è purtroppo ignota ma, poiché vuolsi che essa sia un ramo della nobile casata napoletana conosciuta come Vecchio o del Vecchio, si è soliti attribuirle quel blasone. Di antica nobiltà i Vecchio, poi anche del Vecchio e Lo Vecchio, giunsero nel Regno di Napoli da Siena, nel secolo decimo sesto. Le prime memorie certe si hanno nel salernitano con un Geronimo, milite al servizio del duca Tristaven, che per i suoi atti valorosi ottenne molte grazie e gradi di nobiltà come si legge in un privilegio del 3 aprile 1293. Nel "Cedolario Antico" (anni 1582/4) è segnato il "magnifico" Marcantonio de Vecchio oltre che un Bartolomeo de la Vecchia nel 1691. L'autore Ughelli, nel suo
