Antica ed assai nobile famiglia del Regno di Napoli, di chiara ed avita virtù, che vuolsi fregiata del titolo di Barone di Mistri, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Europa. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, la famiglia appartiene alla illustre prosapia dei Russo, di origine normanna e nota in Sicilia, sin dal secolo XII. Essa dunque discende da Ugone il Rosso, da cui deriva la cognominizzazione, conte di Sperlinga nel 1132, figlio di Guglielmo D'Altavilla di Tancredi D'Altavilla e fratello di Ruggero, della real casa Normanna di Sicilia. Un Rosso, secondo il Villabianca, fu nel 1132 barone di Sperlinga; un altro Rosso, barone di Cerami, fu vessillifero di re Pietro I d'Aragona; un Federico fu senatore di Messina nel 1286; un Enrico fu barone di Aidone nel 1282, maestro razionale del R. Patrimonio, sposò Elisabetta Ventimiglia, di Francesco conte di Geraci, ed ebbe in dote la baronia di
