Famiglia patrizia genovese, antichissima in Ventimiglia, donde emigrarono per le discordie intestine della loro patria nel vicino comune libero di Tàggia ed in Genova. Fu costantemente ghibellina, di che dà ancora segno la sua arma, anzi capeggiò in Ventimiglia quella fazione: nell'anno 1270 insorsero in armi contro il podestà Luchetto Grimaldi di parte guelfa, sostenuti dal Comune di Genova, che inviò loro Luchetto Dòria, Ansaldo Castelli e Guglielmo Torre. Nel secolo XIII possedevano le terre di Airole e Roccabruna, la prima delle quali fu donata l'anno 1273 (25 gennaio) da Folco C. al monastero di Pésio. Trasferitisi in Taggia, alcune linee vi restarono fino ad oggi, altre passarono in Genova. Ben é vero pertanto che già da prima, fin dall'anno 1160, se ne trova memoria in Genova, e poi proseguirono ad immigrarvi, come quando Luigi C. da Ventimiglia ottenne decreto nel 1427 di abitazione in Genova.
