Antica ed assai nobile famiglia di origine normanna, secondo gli antichi genealogisti Capece e Ammirato, ma l'origine del presunto capostipite dai Duchi di Gaeta ci fa ipotizzare una origine longobarda. Secondo il Capece il capostipite sarebbe stato un Loffredo (Goffredo), forse figlio di un Duca di Gaeta Fu egli Conte di Montescaglioso al tempo di Ruggero II Re di Sicilia e compare come testimone in un atto stipulato tra questo sovrano ed il Papa. In ogni modo la famiglia si stabilì primieramente in Napoli, ove ha goduto nobiltà nei seggi di Capuana e Portanova, successivamente in Cava dei Tirreni ed infine in Messina. Il casato risulta fregiato di molti e pregevoli titoli nobiliari, quali: duca di Ossada, marchese di Melia, conte di Guido, barone della tonnara di Patti, barone di Longi, signore delle saline di Platanella, di Cianciana e Cantarella, marchese di Cassibile, marchese di Mongiuffi e Kaggi, nobili dei
