Antichissimo e celebre casato, detto Mauro, Di Mauro o de' Mauro, la quale, al dir del Flaminio Rossi, vanta origini remotissime in Volterra. Fu proprio tal famiglia, inoltre, ad aver dato alla Chiesa il pontefice Lino, uno dei primi discepoli di S. Pietro, imparentandosi, poi, con le principali famiglie di Roma, da dove, successivamente, passò in Venezia. Dal Mugnos, sappiamo che il casato si stanziò nella città di Messina, con un Mauro, i cui figli servirono lodevolmente i reali siciliani, tanto da ottenere in ricompensa castellanie e feudi, verso il XIV secolo. Un Filippo fu senatore di Messina nel 1302; un Pietro, milite, fu secreto e maestro procuratore di Messina sotto re Federico; un Giovanni, da Messina, possedette il feudo Furnari, che, alla sua morte senza figli, venne concesso a 31 marzo 1375 a Stefano de Mauro, pure da Messina; un Mauro fu uno dei credenzieri della dogana di Messina
