Die ursprünglich aus der Provence stammende Familie stammte von einem Scipione de Laurens ab, einem Adligen von Draguignan, der in der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts lebte. Viele seiner Mitglieder bekleideten angesehene Positionen im Dienst der Könige von Frankreich: Wir erinnern uns an Peter von Peter, den Herrn von Peyrolles, der in der ersten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts als Berater des Königs und dann als Generalanwalt des Dix-Parlaments tätig war. Pietros Bruder Jacopo zog nach Livorno, um den Handelsberuf auszuüben, wodurch der Livorno-Zweig der Familie entstand. Die Lorenzi wurden zu einer der berühmtesten Familien der Stadt, da sie dank Ferdinando I dei Medici an Bedeutung gewannen.
