L'antica e nobile famiglia Carrara di Fano è oriunda di Sora nel Regno di Napoli, ma essa non è altro che una diramazione dei principi Carrara signori di Carrara e Padova. Infatti lo stemma è identico. Riconosce come suo capostipite Ardissone figlio di Francesco Novello conte di Carrara e signore di Padova. Francesco Novello nel 1412 fu anche fatto Conte di Ascoli Piceno da Re di Ladislao; città che tenne fino al 1426 in cui gli fu tolta da Giovanna Regina di Napoli. Ardissone sposò Antonia figlia del conte Sforza, e perduto il dominio di Ascoli andò a combattere in Lombardia nel 1427; quindi nel 1436 andò in Calabria servizio del re Alfonso d'Aragona. Stanco poi di combattere, fu invitato dal Duca di Sora (in quel di Napoli) a stabilirsi in detta città. Da Ardissone dunque hanno principio i Carrara di Sora, dove molto eccelsero.
