Originalmente não foi apelido, mas patronímico, o nome desta família. Os genealogistas pretendem que os L. viessem de Espanha, de Sabóia ou de Inglaterra, onde existiam famílias do mesmo nome. Alguns dizem que é portuguesa e originária da vila de Belmonte, se bem que a pessoa mais antiga que apontam não seja dali natural, nem moradora. É ela João Rodrigues Lucas, pessoa principal na vila de Alcácer do Sal, casado com D.Mécia Gil Salema, irmã de Cristóvão Salema, a qual enviuvando se recebeu com Afonso Dinis, que parece ter sido pai de outro de igual nome, passado á Índia como Capitão de uma nau nos primeiros anos depois do seu descobrimento. João Rodrigues e sua mulher tiveram geração que continuou o apelido, destacando-se, entre ela, Rui Correia Lucas,que foi do Conselho dos Reis D.João IV e D.Afonso VI, Deputado da Junta dos Três Estados, e Comendador da Ordem de Cristo.
