Illustre famiglia di Lucca, ricordata nei documenti fin dal sec. XIII, e ch'ebbe a podestà di Genova nel 1227 un Lazzaro di Gherardino. Bandita come guelfa nel 1312, ritornò nella sua città nel 1355, e ricoprì dal 1449 fino alla caduta della Repubblica, e durante il Principato Napoleonico e il Ducato Borbonico, le più alte magistrature. I principali personaggi che illustrarono questa fam. furono: Girolamo di Francesco, podestà di Genova nel 1553, come attestava l'iscrizione nel palazzo pretorio di quella città con l'arma e cimiero, illustrato da un angelo col motto: Spera in Deo. Il medesimo fu ambasciatore di Lucca a Firenze nel 1545, a Filippo II nel 1551, e a Giulio III nel 1554. Nello stesso secolo Francesco, Paolino, Girolamo, Lucchesino e Jacopo furono Anziani della Repubblica lucchese.
