Originaire du Tyrol où, à la fin du XVIe siècle, un Michel vivait dans le village de Rens près de Bolzano, qui fut élevé au premier rang de noblesse du Saint Empire romain germanique par l'empereur Ferdinand II avec un diplôme du 7 septembre 1633 , avec le prédicat de Windegg ; ainsi son fils Giovanni, chancelier de l'archiduc Léopold Guillaume d'Autriche, est venu de l'Empire. Ferdinand II reconfirma le titre avec diplôme le 14 novembre 1644. Simone, fils du susmentionné Giovanni, ayant tué un prince de la maison régnante en duel, dut s'exiler et déménagea à Salò sur le lac de Garde, transplantant ainsi la famille dans la région de Brescia au deuxième milieu du XVIIe siècle.
