La Casa Ludovisi si crede essere originaria di Firenze però la troviamo già in Bologna fino dall'anno 982 nominata in un istromento fatto fra Basilio e Costantino imperatori a Don Giovanni Morosini abbate di S. Giorgio Maggiore. Un Giovanni Nicolò si trasferì in Francia nel 1395 e fu da quel re nominato Conte di Agramonte. Girolamo di Bertrando fu Senatore di Bologna creato da Giulio II (Della Rovere 1503-1513) nel 1507, onore che ebbe pure Nicolò suo figlio il quale fu anche investito del titolo di Conte della Samoggia da Leone X (Medici 1513-1521) Alessandro figlio di Pompeo fu creato Papa il 9 Marzo 1621 e prese il nome di Gregorio XV, il di lui fratello Orazio fu fatto Generale di S. R. Chiesa, Lodovico figlio di Orazio fu cardinale e Nicolò fratello di quest'ultimio ebbe tre mogli, la prima Isabella Gesualdi da cui ebbe il principato di Venosa, la
