Alte und sehr edle lombardische Familie, von klarer und angestammter Tugend, verbreitete sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte in verschiedenen Regionen Italiens und der Welt. Bekannt als Lugano, de Lugano, von Lugano oder Lugani, zog es von dieser Stadt zwischen dem 12. und 14. Jahrhundert hauptsächlich ins Piemont. Tatsächlich blühten bereits 1310 einige Kerne in Pedemonte auf, von wo aus sie sich nach Tortona und Pozzolo Formigaro verzweigten. Einige Siedlungen wurden auch auf ligurischem Gebiet registriert. Jedenfalls wurde der auffälligste Zweig der Lugano im Laufe des 16. Jahrhunderts nach Mailand verpflanzt und dann zu diesem Adel zusammengefasst. Andererseits besaß die Familie Lugano zahlreiche Liegenschaften, sowohl Mobilien als auch Immobilien, im gesamten Brianza-Gebiet. Der klare Adel des lombardischen Zweigs der Lugano wird weiter durch die Präsenz seines Wappens in einigen der wertvollsten europäischen Waffenkammern und in den Staatsarchiven bestätigt.
