Antigua y muy noble familia lombarda, de clara y ancestral virtud, difundida a lo largo de los siglos en diversas regiones de Italia y del mundo. Conocido como Lugano, de Lugano, de Lugano o Lugani, se trasladó desde esa ciudad, entre los siglos XII y XIV, principalmente al Piamonte. De hecho, ya en 1310 florecieron algunos núcleos en Pedemonte desde donde se ramificaron hacia Tortona y Pozzolo Formigaro. También se registraron algunos asentamientos en el territorio de Liguria. En cualquier caso, la rama más conspicua de Lugano, en el transcurso del siglo XVI, fue luego trasplantada a Milán y luego agregada a esa nobleza. Por otro lado, la familia Lugano ha sido propietaria de numerosas propiedades, tanto muebles como inmuebles, en toda la zona de Brianza. La clara nobleza de la rama lombarda de Lugano se confirma aún más por la presencia de su blasón en algunas de las armerías
