Famiglia assai antica e nobile propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli in varie regioni d'Italia, donde ne acquisirono la nobiltà e vi furono accolti nelle importanti cariche della città dove ebbero dimora. La cognominizzazione, anteriore al XIII secolo, dovrebbe derivare dalla probabile terra di origine del capostipite. Cospicua tra le famiglie fiorentine, godé l'anzianato fin dal 1251 nella persona di messer Ridolfo giudice, ed ebbe otto priori. Andrea, di Giovanni, passò alla Corte di Polonia presso il Re Giovanni Sobieski che lo ebbe carissimo e lo creò barone. Tornato a Firenze, vi morì ultimo della sua casa il 24 Luglio 1748, lasciando erede Caterina, figlia di Tommaso, suo fratello, e moglie di Lorenzo Bonaccorsi Perini.
