Antica ed assai nobile famiglia lombarda, con residenza in Pavia ed in Milano, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Secondo quanto riportato dal genealogista Giovan Battista Crollalanza, nei volumi del suo "Dizionario storico-blasonico delle famiglie nobili e notabili italiane estinte e fiorenti", pubblicato a Pisa nel 1886 in tre volumi, di oltre 1400 pagine, da Bernardo Lunati, che ebbe in feudo la valle de' Ratti nel 1386 discendono: a) i Lunati Crivelli, che diedero alla patria numerosi decurioni ma che si estinsero nei Casati, nel 1737; b) i Lunati Visconti, marchesi di Carbonara dal 1603, eredi del Cardinale Federico Visconti, Arcivescovo di Milano, i quali diedero alla patria numerosi senatori, decurioni e dottori di Collegio ma che si estinsero nei conti Taverna; c) i marchesi Lunati che diedero decurioni a Pavia, ciambellani e cavalieri di Malta. In Milano, inoltre, fiorì un'altra famiglia Lunati che diede sindaci fiscali,
