Antica ed assai nobile famiglia veneta, detta Macario, Maccario Macari o de Macari, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Lo Zagata, d'altronde, riferisce che, il 26 luglio 1239, M. Costantino, essendo di parte guelfa, venne esiliato da Verona; invece i guelfi nel 1393 bruciarono la casa di Giovanni Francesco M. a Bergamo, dove in seguito esercitarono il notariato alcuni Maccario, cognome derivato da quello dei Macari e che ricorda i SS. Macario della chiesa ortodossa. Ma per quello che riguarda specificatamente le vicende dei Maccario nel Veneto, le notizie vengono meno nei secoli XV e XVI. Solo in quello successivo si apprende che, il 10 giugno 1627, un Angelo Maccario, Contestabile alla Porta di Porto della fortezza di Legnago, era già morto in quell'epoca, forse nell'adempiere il suo dovere con altri compagni.
