La famiglia Macchia è assai antica e nobile, di origine longobarda, di cui si ha memoria in Teramo, ove possedeva il castello di Macchia fino dal secolo XII. Al dir di F. Sansovino nell'opera " Origini e fatti delle famiglie illustri d'Italia", stampato in Venezia nel 1770, questa è "un illustre famiglia italiana, una delle più antiche e nobili degli Abruzzi". Altro ramo. Antica e nobile famiglia della Campania detta Macchia o Lamacchia. La presenza dell'arma e del motto nella bibliografia documentata della famiglia Macchia ci conferma l'avita nobiltà raggiunta dalla casata. Infatti l'origine del motto risale a circa il XIV secolo e deve essere ricercata in quei detti arguti che venivano scritti sui vessilli o bandiere dei cavalieri, esposti alle finestre delle locande in cui questi alloggiavano, in occasione dei tornei, e durante i tornei stessi. Il motto era un pensiero espresso in poche parole facente allusione a un sentimento
