Antica ed assai nobile famiglia portoghese, originaria di Macedo de Cavaleiros, città da cui trasse il nome, situata nel nel distretto di Bragança, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni del mondo. Secondo alcuni genealogisti, il capostipite di tal famiglia andrebbe individuato nel gentiluomo João Gonçalves de Macedo, signore di numerose terre in Macedo de Cavaleiros, il quale sposò D. Urraca Esteves. Da costui, discesero: João Macedo, nobile della Casa Reale, il quale ricevette da Manuel I, il 15 aprile 1518, la concessione dello stemma come da noi descritto, e Martim Gonçalves de Macedo, notabile cavaliere che salvò la vita del Maestro di Aviz, durante la battaglia di Aljubarrota, uccidendo il cavaliere castigliano D. Alvaro Sandoval. Tra i personaggi che maggiormente hanno illustrato questa famiglia vi è certamente António de Sousa Macedo (Porto, 15 dicembre 1606 – Lisbona, 1 novembre 1682), primo barone
