Noble familia originaria de Portugal, cuyo solar radicó en Macedo de los Caballeros (del que sin duda tomó el nombre), en la comarca de Braganza Tras Os Montes. Los genealogistas mencionan, como primeros ascendientes, a Rui Martins de M., Señor de Sanceris, que vivió en tiempos del Rey don Dionis, a quien sucedió su hijo Gonzalo Rodríguez de M., que poseyó dicho Señorío y fué Alcaide del Castillo de Feira, sucediéndole Martín Gonzales de M., que en la batalla de Aljubarrota socorrió al Rey don Juan I, matando a su adversario Alvar González de Sandoval, caballero castellano que se había apoderado de una maza y golpeaba al Monarca con ella. Recibió, en premio de este hecho, la alcaldía del castillo de Outeiro, los derechos reales de Braganza y el Señorío de las aldeas de Melgazo y Pindella.
