Cette famille a ajouté à son nom celui de Pompadour, de même qu'elle a joint à ses armes celles de cette illustre maison du Limousin depuis l'alliance que Jean, seigneur de la Mechaussée, contracta en 1538 avec Françoise de Pompadour. Le Nobiliaire du Limousin rapporte que Nicolas Maschat de la Meschaussée de la Coste de Pompadour, d'une très noble famille du Quercy, succéda à Marguerite Pompadour son aïeule, morte en 1625, seule du nom, et héritière des biens de cette maison du Périgord. La branche de Machat-Pompadour était encore, en 1825, représentée à Excideuil (Dordogne) par le comte de ce nom, colonel d'infanterie, chevalier de l'ordre de Saint-Louis; et par le chevalier de Machet, également chevalier de Saint-Louis. Le nom Machat est inscrit dans la liste des familles maintenues dans leur noblesse et figure égalemant dans celle des votant pour les députés de l'ordre aux Etats-Généraux de 1789, à Saint-Yrieix et en Saintonge.
