La famiglia M. fù antichissima in Leontini, ne' tempi di Decio Imperadore, condotta ivi da Giulio Palmato Presidente di Sicilia nel 229, del Signore, e da Nicardo suo fratello descendenti de' Madaleni. Nicandro fù genitor della martire Santa Epifania, e di Rodippo Vescovo di Leontini, le cui vite si leggono nel Leggendario de' Santi di Sicilia. In tempo di Giorgio Maniace Essarco di Sicilia si legge un Guido M. Governador di Messina, e Giovanni M. Castellano di Leontini, nel reggimento del Rè Gugliemo il malo. Nicolò M. fù anche Castallano d'Agrigento, sotto l'Imperador Federico secondo, e Gio. Guido nel 1276. In molte parti del Regno, se ne ritrova di questa famiglia con gli splendori della nobiltà, ne' tempi antichi, e particolarmente alcune genti ordinarie, con questo cognome, derivate forse, o della medesma famiglia, e per poverta ricadute nella bassezza, e nell'arti meccaniche, come in molt'altre se nè veggono, o per
