Una delle più potenti famiglie che ressero nei secoli xiii e xiv le sorti di Brescia fu quella dei M.,: è noto che per porre fine all'anarchia insorta dalle lotte tra fazioni guelfo -gibelline il Gran Consiglio deliberò di affidare il governo cittadino al vescovo Berardo Maggi la cui saggezza ed energia riuscì con la pace giurata dai contendenti nel 1298, a ristabilire ordine e tranquillità nella patria dilaniata.
