Família Lombard antiga, de virtude clara e ancestral, que se espalhou ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália. A origem dessa cognominação, segundo os genealogistas competentes, deve ser buscada, por meio de aumentativas, em um apelido baseado, por sua vez, na profissão de "maister", ou "mestre artesão", provavelmente realizado por um, hoje desconhecido, progenitor.
