Antica ed illustre casato originario del territorio di Cremona propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia con insediamenti cospicui nel Regno di Sicilia ove si leggono alcune varianti del cognome. Dette alla patria sei decurioni, dei quali il primo fu Maffino, eletto nel 1307, e l'ultimo un altro Maffino nel 1529; un Maffuccio canonico e poeta per diletto, vivente nel 1550; un Giovanni, dottore in utroque iure in Napoli, vivente nel 1590. Il Litta nelle sua opera " Famiglie celebri italiane in foglio", e con lui gli autori concordemente, dice essere questa una nobile famiglia Lombarda.
