Originally from Lorraine, and first transplanted to Lake Como around 1300. Before 1400 a Bernardo Mainoni was lord of Intignano and owner of Volesio. Later the Mainoni bought other fiefdoms and the dominion of the so called Alps of Intignano. In 1793 they were inscribed among the Milanese patricians; and in 1818 they had the nobility of the Austrian government in the person of Stefano-Bernardo with the privilege of adding the preached d'Intignano to the surname. This family boasts a Commend. of the Legion of Honor, two horsemen of the Iron Crown, one of the Prussian Order of Military Merit, and a Commend. of the Red Eagle of Prussia. The presence of the motto in the documented bibliography of the family confirms the ancestral nobility of the family. In fact, the origin of the motto dates back to around the 14th century and must be sought in those witty sayings
